An Intimate Look at Vaping and Pregnancy

Being pregnant is considered to be one of the most joyous as well as scary time in a woman’s life. While the former is obvious, the latter can be quite puzzling. Why would a pregnant woman be scared? Well, for one, pregnant women tend to be more at risk when it comes to certain conditions. One such example would be smoking during pregnancy.

Smoking has always been considered as a threat to one’s health. It is considered to be the primary cause of lung cancer as well as coronary heart disease, stroke, and a number of vascular diseases. Because of the great impact it carries, it is something that most medical professionals recommend against, especially for pregnant women.

In pregnant women, smoking has been known to cause a number of medical problems with the unborn child. Some of these would include premature birth, respiratory problems, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and low birth weight. On the side of the mother, smoking during pregnancy can lead to stillbirth, miscarriage and tubal pregnancy.

Of course, habits can be quite hard to break. That being the case, those who cannot easily let go of their nicotine cravings could either go for a nicotine patch or try an electronic cigarette; but what about pregnant smokers? Are these options also safe for them?

Here Comes Electronic Cigarettes

For most people who are into smoking but would like to lessen their nicotine intake, technology now offers what is now known as vapes, or electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarette is actually a vaporizer that produces an aerosol. This aerosol is produced with the help of an atomizer that causes the liquid solution, or juice, to vaporize. The aerosol is what you see as smoke coming out of the electronic cigarette.

Now, there are very little literature that would suggest a relationship between using electronic cigarette and pregnancy. Those that exist seem to imply that nicotine, regardless if it is coming from a patch, a cigarette, or a vape, can be absorbed by the body, enough to reach the growing fetus. The difference lies in the amount absorbed. Of the three, smoking has the highest amount absorbed, followed by the patch, and then the electronic cigarette. Based on this hierarchy then, we could assume that, in the case of electronic cigarettes, there is already very little nicotine that gets absorbed by the body as well as by the baby, making it a bit safer so long as the mother does not engage in regular smoking. This, however, is still purely speculation and also calls to question what happens if the mother would indulge in regular smoking of an e-cigarette.

With the jury still out on whether electronic cigarette is bad for you, it comes as no surprise that more and more people who are trying to, at least, control the habit, are still going after the e-cigarette. Fortunately, you need not look very far if you want to buy one as there are more than a handful of online sellers of electronic cigarettes. Most of these online sellers have their own electronic cigarette merchant accounts and secure payment gateway allowing you to make a stress-free purchase.

Grimm Green: The FDA is Serious 4-24-2014

Many of you may have seen this video by Grimm Green, but I am posting it for those who have not.  Every e-cigarette user and vapor should take fifteen minutes out and watch it. Grimm talks about how the FDA regulations look harmless at first look but are not good for our community, especially for vendors.

Please watch this video and share it with everyone.  Take this seriously and then write to your congressmen, call them, sign petitions, support CASSA.  We need to do everything in our power to make sure these regulations are not made into law or the e-cigarette and vaping industry we know today will no longer exist in two years.  Watch the video to learn why.

Vaping vs Smoking Filter Test

Erik Colvin feels like the vaping industry is always being attacked, so he decided to make a YouTube video that shows the difference between what a smoker is inhaling when they smoke a cigarette, and what a vaper is inhaling when they vape e-juice. Here's Erik's video followed by a short interview.

Vaping Blog:  What inspired you to make this video?

Erik:  I feel like the vaping industry is always being attacked, instead of receiving praise for helping so many people quit smoking. It seems to me that it's a better answer than "Chantix" which has been responsible for 500 suicides since it's conception, but you never hear about that. It's only briefly mentioned in the side effects on the voice over. Even if vaping wasn't 100% safe, big tobacco kills 1,200 people a day. I would think that would take precedence in the governments/ FDA's attention. I have yet to hear of anyone killed by vaping. I know they have the two go to incidents; the poorly supervised child that drank a bottle of eliquid and got nicotine poisoning, and the guy with a homemade mechanical mod sporting stacked batteries and no vent holes, that turned it into a pipe bomb. Both incidents are unfortunate and my heart goes out to those people. However, it is nothing, nothing compared to the 500 killed by Chantix , or the 1200 a day killed by big tobacco.

Vaping Blog:  It looks like you are in the attic. Why?

Erik:   The video was filmed in my garage. I needed a place I could control the lighting as well as smoke. No way was I lighting up in my house.

Vaping Blog:  How long have you been vaping? Were you a smoker? How long?

Erik:  I started smoking at the age of 15. I tried to quit with every different method imaginable but to no avail. Until the age of 35 when I came across vaping and quit that very day for good. I'm 37 now and have been vaping for over two years.

Vaping Blog:  Can you talk a bit about your 7th grade science project. It obviously left an impression on you. Was it to teach students why they shouldn't smoke?

Erik:  The 7th grade project was almost identical to what I did in the video, and yes it was that teachers way of showing us how stupid it is to smoke. Unfortunately it still wasn't enough to keep me from starting.

Vaping Blog:  What level nic was the juice you used? Have you tried this with different levels? I'm wondering if there is a difference?

Erik: The juice I'm using in the video is 6 mg. I've tried it with 12 also and the effect was exactly the same. I have never gone higher than 12 though, because I don't vape any higher than that. It shouldn't make a difference how high you go with the nicotine, because the nicotine isn't what your seeing on the cigarette sample. It's tar and all the other junk they put in those things.

News: The Vaping Underground is Coming, a Forum For Everyone...Now!

Here we go, a new vaping forum is being developed - Vaping Underground. Just what we need, right? Another discussion forum. There are already more than a few out there, what makes this one special? Well, it seems that some of the largest and most popular forums may be full of good information, but they charge vendors to participate, they censor posts and they just have way too many rules that make participation a frustrating experience.

Without naming names, I joined one and found that I was only allowed to post in the "beginners" area.  I had to post X amount of times before being allowed to post elsewhere. I found that several other forums seem to copy this one forum, including the rules.  Another forum doesn't even allow you to view posts unless you are registered and signed in. Once you are allowed to post to all areas of these forums, you have to be very careful about what you say.  It is very easy to unintentionally post something unacceptable.  It seems like the only acceptable posts are positive posts about the site's advertisers.  Anything negative is a violation, as is anything positive about a company that is not a paid advertiser. Who needs that?

I've seen a few people get mad, go off and start their own discussion forum.  I try to support them, but in reality, it can take years of hard work and devotion to get a forum going.  You have to be able to draw people in and engage them to keep them coming back.  This is easy for an established forum, but very difficult for a new forum.

So, what makes The Vaping Underground different?  First, it will be free. Vendors will not have to pay a fee to participate. Discussion will be open and uncensored.  Well, I am sure there will be some censorship, they do have to keep the Viagra ads out, but it will be uncensored as far as posting your opinion about a vaping product or vaping experience goes. If you try a new juice and it's awesome, you can post about it without checking to see if the vendor is an approved vendor first.

Second, this forum is likely to take off as it is the brainchild of Joe Petner (Vapor Joe).  Joe and his team have put a lot of thought into it and are taking their time and planning to do it right. Joe spoke about it on Mod Envy.  He discussed his reason for doing this and what viewers should expect.  He basically said that discussion boards should be free and fun. The Vaping Underground team have a mailing list.  You can sign up to get updates about the site.  Joe and his team have done an excellent job publicizing this list and there are already thousands of people signed up.  This means the site should take off rather fast as there is already a large audience waiting to start posting and discussing all things vaping.

Too Hot for TV: Vapor Zone Super Bowl Commercial

This is a testament to how much money there is to be made in the e-cig biz.  This ad will air during the Super Bowl.  Imagine how much that costs.  Vapor Zone is a subsidiary of the International Vapor Group, Inc. IVG manufactures, distributes and markets products by South Beach Smoke, EverSomoke, NutriCigs and Vapor Zone. These are said to be some of the biggest names in in e-cigarettes.
IVG was started in 2009 in Miami Lakes, Fl. and has been expanding ever since. IVG's products are sold on-line and through authorized retailers around the globe. Each of their brands were developed to suit a particular customer profile as they recognize that each individual has unique needs regarding the way in which they want to quit smoking.  Their products were created to address those needs.
According to ZoomInfo, IVG employeess 100-250 employees and rakes in $25 - $50 million dollars a year. IVG's CEO, Nick Molina, was interviewed on Bloomberg TV:   E-Cigarettes Growth Lights Up.
It is nice to see how a company that started out small in 2009 has grown to the point they can afford to run an ad during the Super Bowl.

E Cigarette Talk

About the same time that I started Vaping Blog, I came across another new site in the form of a discussion board. The name of this site, or forum, is E Cigarette Talk. Knowing how hard it can be to get a new website, blog or discussion forum going, I decided I want to help them out a bit by introducing them to my readers.

E Cigarette Talk is very similar in appearance to other well known e-cigarette discussion forums. It consists of a number of categories, each with sub-categories, in which members can start discussions/threads on topics of their choice, as well as reply to those started by others.

E-Cigarette Talk Discussion Forum

E- Cigarette Talk is moderated by a gentleman named Frank who is very supportive of the community. I had an opportunity to ask Frank a few questions about the forum and about himself.

VB: Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your e-cig experience?

Frank: Well I'm a very hard working person. I have a regular 9-5 job and I moderate this forum on my free time. I'm married and I have a baby on the way. I have been vaping for a few years now after smoking cigarettes for 14 years. I have been smoke free for 4 years now.

VB: What made you decide to create this board?

Frank: The board was created by someone else. The owner gave me the moderator position. I know that he created this forum after being banned from a very popular forum for simply asking questions about how to start an eliquid company, and he didn't like his experience with that other forum, so he created this one. He never did start the eliquid company.

VB: Can you tell us a bit about your equipment and favorite liquids?

Frank: I currently vape with a Provari and a Kanger Protank 2. When I'm at work, I vape with an eGo 1100 mah and a Kanger Protank Mini 2. I have invested well over 1k on all the equipment that I have, but I currently only use that Provari and the eGo. My favorite liquid would be my own DIY which is the Tribeca that I make.

E Cigarette Talk is a friendly place to post.  Vendors are encouraged to post and a few have been posting discount codes.  If you have some free time, take a look.  If you like what you see, sign up and join the discussions or start some of your own.

Cigarette Smoke vs E-Juice Vapor

This is an interesting video.  Check out the vape tank!  A plastic bottle.  The point of this video is to demonstrate the difference between smoking cigarettes and vaping e-juice, or smoking electronic cigarettes. It's a science experiment!  When you see the end results, you will be grateful that you discovered e-cigs and/or vaping!  Trust me!

Vaper's Tongue

It can happen to anyone who vapes. You buy all of these delicious, flavorful liquids, and you vape, vape, vape. One day you load up your tank with your favorite e-juice and you can't taste anything. You think your battery is low or your coil is shot. You change both. You still can't taste anything. It's perplexing as there is plenty of vapor. You start trying different juices. They all taste the same, like nothing. What is going on here?

It's called Vaper's Tongue and it's quite common. If you have just quit smoking and switched to vaping, your taste buds need time to recover. You will find that not only e-juice, but food and beverages in general don't taste as flavorful as they should. This is one of the many consequences of smoking. Once you quit, your sense of taste will improve but it takes time.

Once you start vaping you have to make sure to drink plenty of water or some other beverage to keep yourself hydrated. (Coffee, beer and alcohol in general cause dehydration). Vaping can easily cause dehydration as it tends to suck up all of the moisture in your mouth. This is easily prevented by making sure to drink and vape rather than vape alone.

Another cause of vaper's tongue is lack of variety. The more you expose your tongue to the same flavor without switching it up, there more likely you will get a case of vaper's tongue. Keep at least two or three tanks of different liquids on you at all times. Rotate them. If you vape one juice exclusively, a time will come when you can't taste it anymore.

Vaper's tongue does not only affect your ability to taste e-juice, it affects your ability to taste anything. It may take two or three days to recover from a case of vaper's tongue. It is believed that PG is more likely to cause vaper's tongue than VG. If you find yourself getting cottonmouth while vaping, try switching to an all VG liquid or increasing the VG and decreasing the PG when you order your juice.

Some people suggest eating something sweet or rinsing your mouth out with mouth wash. Chocolate is said to help. It's likely that eating food in general helps as chewing food stimulates saliva production. Cinnamon flavored liquid is said to make the problem worse, so avoid e-juice with cinnamon until you recover. Others say that shocking the tongue is in order, eat something unusual like a dill pickle or an olive.

Catching a cold or getting sick in general may also cause you to lose the ability to taste. In this case, all you can really do is wait it out until you get better.

Vaper's tongue is very similar to olfactory fatigue which affects the sense of smell rather than taste.
"Olfactory fatigue, also known as odor fatigue or olfactory adaptation, is the temporary, normal inability to distinguish a particular odor after a prolonged exposure to that airborne compound. For example, when entering a restaurant initially the odor of food is often perceived as being very strong, but after time the awareness of the odor normally fades to the point where the smell is not perceptible or is much weaker. After leaving the area of high odor, the sensitivity is restored with time...Olfactory fatigue is an example of neural adaptation or sensory adaptation. The body becomes desensitized to stimuli to prevent the overloading of our nervous system, thus allowing it to respond to new stimuli that are ‘out of the ordinary’." - Wikipedia.

In reality, vaper's tongue simply requires time and hydration in order to make it go away. For more information, please read this article about taste fatigue.
